The State Archive of Massa provides for the conservation, protection, research and enhancement of the documentary heritage, the management of services to the public, teaching and training activities, with competence in the territory of the province. The traditional function of conservation is increasingly expanding in the direction of the use and enhancement of archival assets and the dissemination of historical knowledge.
It currently preserves about 42,000 archival units, as well as 973 scrolls and 2,886 maps. The core of the documentary heritage is the Ducal Archive, or Secret, which includes the Diplomatic, the Statutes, the Malaspina Archive of Fosdinovo, the Cybo Malaspina Archive, the Appendix of the Cybo Archive and the Chamber of Commerce Archive. To these have been added, over time, the government archives of the Napoleonic period and the Restoration, the judicial archives, notaries, of the peripheral offices of the unitary State, of the municipalities, of moral and private entities.
